Conlang happiness – Ie

Been working on a conlang that’s supposed to be a naming language for some of my comic characters (specifically Delia Troy Burton). I have an Hawaiian grammar from the 70s which I’m using as a model, because it’s the only grammar I have for an analytic language.

It’s called Ie.

At some point, I’ll probably upload my grammar like I did for Nyjichun. I’m currently doing it in HTML instead of in a TiddlyWiki. That may change or I may just make it more than one page at some point. I dunno.

Anyway, the point of this post was to share some words! It’s tonal and differentiates between aspirated and non-aspirated words, but for simplicity’s sake (and to keep from having to post the phonology) I’ll just give the romanticized form. The only note I’ll make is that /c/ is pronounced like /ch/ in English). No, I can’t pronounce most of it. See if you can pick out which words are compounds from other words! (Hint: not all the meanings are given here).

Cocktail of the Night mini – Campton Cure Martini

Wanted a drink, yet again.

Off CocktailBuilder.com

1 oz of Absolut Citron Vodka (or citrus-infused vodka)
1 oz of Cointreaux (or orange liqueur)
3 squeeze of Lime Juice (how much is a squeeze?!!)
Cranberry Juice (I hate it when they don’t give amounts)
Blend ingredients and serve on the rocks.
Other sources gave it as
1 oz of Absolut Citron Vodka (or citrus-infused vodka)
1/2 oz of Cointreaux
3 squeeze of Lime Juice
Splash of Cranberry Juice
Stir with ice and strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
So I went with the second one, substituting orangecello with Cointreau. I think I put in to much lime because it was seriously tart (really, how much is a squeeze?) So I added more orangecello. Would definitely try this one again.

Cocktail of the Night mini – Suffering Bastard

This isn’t going to be a proper Cocktail of the Night post, but I mixed this up and wanted to record it.

I had decided I wanted a drink and was using www.cocktailbuilder.com to get ideas. This was one of the things that popped up:

1 oz of Gin
1 oz of rum (or Light Rum)
1 oz of Rose’s lime juice
bitters (or Angostura bitters)
Ginger ale

Shake all except ginger ale. Pour into glass and fill with ginger ale

I didn’t think I’d like this, since I have a history of not liking stuff with lime juice, but it’s quite good. I went a bit lighter on the lime juice (closer to 3/4 oz) and I probably could have put more bitters in (I love my bitters). But it’s quite tasty and refreshing. Not extremely strong either.

Preview for OCTP #2 Art

octp2

This drawing challenge is going to take me WAY more than 30 days, but I’ve finally started the inks for the second one – Daisy and Wild Rush holding hands. And yes, I still need to actually draw the mini-comic I started.

I have a little bit more than this done (Wild Rush’s head is done – and his hair is always kind of a pain). Planning on not coloring this one.

White Knight Art

Finished the reference sheet for White Knight. Yeah, Delia Troy Burton is under there. Also, my first image for the OCTP meme. Next is them holding hands.

I need to do a whole bunch of designs for Wild Rush’s clothes, because otherwise they all end up looking like this. (He wears solely shades of yellow, black, and red, but I could get a lot more patterns and such in there.)

And you get to see the White Knight logo. Like most comic book logos, the color changes to match the cover.

Nyjichun Culture Notes

A bunch of random things I wrote about the Nyjichun. Completely unedited, so rather rambling and full of notes to myself (in square brackets). To remind you all, the Nyjichun are the ‘race’ Wilykit and Wilykat and my oc, Felino, belong to. There are two major divisions of Nyjichun – the Taijin who are more of warriors and Wanrin who aren’t. Felino is Taijin. Wilykit and Wilykat are Wanrin. The Nyjichun grow slower than other Thunderians and are always shorter.

This is also in the Nyjichun tiddlywiki.

CN: funeral practices, extreme body modifications, racism of fantasy culture, specifically, mention of child theft,

Interest of the moment: Monograms

One of my favorite parts of buying old linens and handkerchiefs is seeing the monograms. And because I love lettering, I like to design them too. It’s this dance of ‘how decorative can I get this before it’s undecipherable?’ Which is really fun. I have probably hundreds of pictures that I’ve found on the web that I use as inspiration. My preference is for the ones with interlocking and interweaving letters.

Here are my three most recent ones:

I need to work on my script lettering. It’s not my strong point at all.

And then my initials, if not my style:

Link Dump – Linguistics Edition

Sorry, this is going to light on pretty pictures and heavy on things that are of limited interest to most people. You don’t like it, there are thousands of other blogs you could be reading.

Teach yourself linguistics

From all things linguistics:

Other Things

From Aveneca.com, host of the new CBB (aka the conlang board I’m on)

Linguistics lessons for language learners. Includes IPA, phonology, morphology, syntax, historical linguistics, sound change, and more. (from Nativlang, which also has some free lessons in different languages and published some books on Amazon and Lulu that look interesting)

It’s ‘not’ history – how negation usage changes in a cycle through languages. (from the University of Cambridge)

Lexique Pro – a free program for creating a lexicon for your conlang (or natlangs). I wish it was portable. Windows only.

How many languages did Tolkien make?

From Frathwiki.com, one of the conlang wikis:

  • Conlang Terminology – common jargon like lostlang, sketchlang, relex, ANADEW (Another Natlang Already Did it Even Worse).
  • Software Tools – a lot of the links are outdated, unfortunately, but there are word generators, several conlanging guides, sound change appliers, and more.

My goals for Nyjichun

In no particular order:

  • To get to 500 words / lexicon entries, not counting affixes (I currently have 371 lexicon entries, but that’s including affixes)
  • Write up a working grammar
  • Sketch out the culture beyond ‘they live in the forest’
  • Make a map of the area
  • Fix all the words I’ve marked as needing change
  • Redo the family words
  • Translate the Babel Text and at least two other long passages (I’m not sure what).
  • Write up enough lessons that I can pick it back up when I want to

After that, I’ll probably be burnt out on conlanging for a while, but if not, I want to fix up one of my other languages (something simpler, sheesh – probably Ylis, which is basically the English of Thundera) and then working on splitting Ŋyjichɯn into two dialects, which will mostly just be vocabulary changes.

I know probably no one cares, but I’ve uploaded a new version of the tiddlywiki. As always, and more visibly now, it’s a work in progress.

Conlanging – Nyjichun

Okay, I’ve finally uploaded the Ŋyjichɯn tiddlywiki*. I’ve also updated lesson one there, with more stuff and assignments (working with the idea that it’s meant to be a textbook). As any conlanger would tell you, it’s very much a work in progress and pretty much everything is subject to change at any time. But now I can go to the conlang forum and ask for input without having to rewrite things. Which is what I’m going to do next.

Notes for using the tiddlywiki: You can navigate from the Table of Contents or tagCloud. Links open below in the same window. I’ve got it set up so the last 20 or whatever links you follow show up on top. And no, you can’t edit it.

*  I should do a blog post about tiddlywikis. They’re very awesome.
